Inside the TWA Terminal at JFK

Last week, Open House New York announced a special last-minute addition to their schedule—JFK Airport’s fabulously modern, Eero Saarinen-designed TWA Terminal. Architecture and aero-buffs were thrilled at the announcement, since the much-loved terminal has been closed to the public since 2001. Open House New York reps tell us that over 1,000 people came through the terminal, which is currently being renovated, during the one afternoon that it was open.

“We knew the opening of the terminal would be a great opportunity for architecture enthusiasts,” says Renee Schacht, executive director of OHNY, “but we were especially gratified to see so many people there who shared their special memories of the terminal with us, including retired TWA pilots, flight attendants, and ground crew.” Here’s a look at what the terminal looks like today!

JFK Then and Now

I arrived home at JFK last night and snapped the central plaza of jetBlue’s T5 and a view of the old TWA terminal by Eero Saarinen. I like the internal lights shining from the TWA building illuminating part of the interior.
