New York from Above

So, in case it was not already apparent, I have a deep and abiding love for my hometown. Those of us born and bred here are somewhat rare since most of the folks in this town seem to be transplants from other towns, cities, and countries. However, no matter from where one comes, when they arrive in New York they are caught up in the energy, excitement, and edginess of the city.

One thing that I find quite interesting is how we as people interact with New York. We spend much of our time at street level - or close to it - hustling around going from one location to another. As we move about the city we may glance upward at a tall building - most people looking up though are tourists - and once we arrive at our destination we ascend in elevators to whichever floor we seek and look out windows at whatever view presents itself. Rarely, if ever, do we ge the chance to view this great metropolis from above. It is perspective that is usually viewed from an airplane either arriving or departing and one that is fleeting at best.

Recently, I stumbled across the work of several amazing photographers including Daniel Acker, Jason Hawkes, Mario Tama, Stan Honda, and Saul Loeb.  What I find so interesting about their work is that they have “slipped the surly bonds of earth” to photograph New York from above. They have ventured forth in helicopters - with no doors and just a simple harness preventing from tumbling to the pavement below (given my paralyzing fear of heights, their accomplishments are that much more amazing to me!) - to capture the majesty of the city.

I present their work in the galleries below. All works are the property of the photographers indicated. I hope you enjoy these views of New York and that you seek out other work (or even hire them!) by these amazing professionals.

Jason Hawkes has a book out of his photography entitled “London at Night” which I intend to purchase. Check it out here. He will be publishing “New York at Night” this Fall.
